Kukio Beach

Kukio Beach is located about a 20-minute drive north of Kailua-Kona downtown at mile marker 87. To access this lovely white-sand beach, you'll have to check in at the Hualalai Four Seasons Resort security gate to get your pass. Take the immediate first left after the gate and keep going until you reach the parking area.

Kukio Beach early morning at low tide

Palms at Hualalai Four Seasons Resort

Kukio beach is a long stretch of white sand with an impressive reef home to many green sea turtles. The seascape is particularly remarkable at low tide revealing rock formations all along the shoreline.

Kukio Beach is one of my favorites. Very accessible with all the amenities and multiple features to use as background. White sand, turtles, palms, Hualalai volcano in the background, a stunning seascape, excellent morning light, and gorgeous sunsets. Ironically, Kukio Beach is not very popular among tourists as access to the water is challenging. The chances are you'll have the beach for yourself.

F. Scott Cahill

Artist Painter

I met Scott after photographing a couple from Sacramento at Kukio Beach. The day was splendid, the low tide had revealed a gorgeous seascape of emerging rock formations along the shoreline, and green sea turtles were feasting on the moss. Scott had just finished his Plein air painting session of the day with a captivating illustration of Kukio Beach at low tide.
